How to Install Cisco Umbrella

Installing Cisco Umbrella involves setting up the DNS-layer security service to protect your network from threats and enforce policies. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you get started:

1. Sign Up for Cisco Umbrella

  • Create an Account:
  • Visit the Cisco Umbrella website.
  • Sign up for an account or contact Cisco for a trial or purchase.

  • Navigate to Settings:
  • In the Umbrella dashboard, go to Settings > Networks.
  • Click on Add Network.
  • Configure Network Details:
  • Enter a name for your network.
  • Specify the IP address ranges for the network you want to protect (e.g., your internal IP ranges).

4. Configure DNS Settings

  • Obtain Umbrella DNS IPs:
  • Cisco Umbrella will provide you with DNS IP addresses.
  • Update DNS Settings:
  • For Routers:
    • Log in to your router’s management interface.
    • Navigate to the DNS settings section.
    • Replace the existing DNS IPs with the Umbrella DNS IPs.
  • For Individual Devices:

  • Download the Client:
  • In the Umbrella dashboard, go to Deployments > Roaming Computers.

  • After installation, the client will automatically connect to Cisco Umbrella.

  • Assign Policies:
  • Apply these policies to the network or devices you configured earlier.

  • Verify that your network and devices are properly connected to Cisco Umbrella by checking the dashboard for activity and status.
  • Monitor Traffic:
  • Use the Umbrella dashboard to monitor network traffic and see how policies are being enforced.

8. Update and Maintain

  • Regular Updates:
  • Ensure that the Umbrella Roaming Client is kept up-to-date on all devices.
  • Periodically review and adjust policies as needed based on your organization’s needs and security landscape.

  • Connectivity Issues:
  • Ensure DNS settings are correctly applied on your router or devices.
  • Check that the Umbrella DNS IPs are reachable.
