MDT Microsoft Deployment Toolkit Retirement of MDT

Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT) is officially Retired/Unsupported

Microsoft Announces Immediate Retirement of MDT (Microsoft Deployment Toolkit)

Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT) has been immediately retired. There will be no further updates, fixes, or support. Existing MDT installations will continue to function as-is, but no future compatibility adaptations for newer Windows versions will be provided.

  • MDT is now officially unsupported.
  • Its distribution packages may eventually be removed or deprecated from official channels.
  • There will be no future enhancements or security updates, and it will not support future Windows releases.

Recommended Transition Pathways

Microsoft recommends migrating deployment workflows to two supported alternatives:

Windows Autopilot

  • A modern, cloud-based solution that offers streamlined and zero-touch Windows provisioning.
  • Ideal for cloud-first scenarios, simplifying device setup and reducing management overhead.

Configuration Manager (OSD)

  • For environments with on-premises infrastructure, ConfigMgr’s Operating System Deployment (OSD) remains a fully supported pathway.

Transition Guidance

Organizations using MDT should:

  1. Review current OS deployment workflows, identifying all MDT-dependent components.
  2. For ConfigMgr users, verify and validate task sequences previously managed by MDT.
  3. For cloud-aligned setups, evaluate Autopilot enrollment and provisioning capabilities.
  4. Update documentation and standard operating procedures to reflect the shift from MDT to the new deployment tools.
ConsiderationImplication
Security & ComplianceUnsupported MDT will receive no security patches, creating potential organizational risk.
Future CompatibilityMDT won’t support upcoming Windows versions—migration ensures future viability.
Operational EfficiencyAutopilot’s cloud-native approach and ConfigMgr’s OSD deliver modernized deployment experiences.

By proactively migrating away from MDT, organizations can leverage more reliable, secure, and scalable deployment tools—aligning with Microsoft’s supported platforms while minimizing operational disruption.
