About a year ago since iOS 8 was released, Apple has included a new device encryption feature. The meaning behind this was to protect and secure device data from hackers, thieves, and also the government agencies. After the company was wrongly accused of cooperating with the US government’s PRISM surveillance program, Apple wanted to be sure that it couldn’t be forced to hand over data in their customers’ devices. So, Apple wanted to give their customers encryption keys to their device’s data.
Most iPhones and iPads are running the latest iOS 8 are probably already protected but some reports show that about one-third have never set a four-digit passcode before.
To turn on the device encryption, here are the simple steps:
Go to your iPad or iPhone settings
- From the home screen you can usually find your settings, go there.
- Then go to Touch ID & Passcode (iPhone 5 and older will just say “Passcode”)
- Turn on passcode
- Once in passcode area, check to make sure the passcode is on and you have strong passcode.
- Once passcode is on, you are set!
- Going back to the setting menu, scroll down to the bottom page and you will see “Data protection is enabled”
This now means your device is encrypted and nobody else can gain access to the data on the device.
