As mentioned in a previous article, 3D printing is gaining popularity and it has now been approved for medicine. Doctors in some cases are able to replace 75% of patient’s skulls with 3D printing materials. Essentially you would take a scan of a patient’s skull and create a rendering in a CAD program. You could then set this to print out using the 3D printing products that would suit. This plastic material would then allow doctors to be able to X-ray through the replacement skull with ease. This is a relatively cutting edge procedure and Oxford Performance Materials is hoping to get other bone producing processes passed by the FDA. It’s a risk worth taking as each new bone manufacturing technique or type could net the company upwards of $100 million dollars.
