Technical terms can get overwhelming, especially in the IT industry, and when they contain too many three-letter acronyms. Like, SSD, which stands for Solid State Drives. These SSDs can be purchased for your desktop or laptop computer. SSDs are like hard drives but without any moving parts and can be used in place of hard drives. Its like a memory card but on steroids and is generally faster than HDDs (hard disk drives). The hard drive, with its mechanical moving parts, is almost certainly the biggest bottleneck in your PC. However, the lack of moving parts with a SSD, actually allows data to be transferred at maximum speeds as well as allowing your machine to run much quieter. Although, this storage upgrade can be costly, the overall benefits outweigh the price.
With a Solid State Drive, you can expect startups, programs and files to launch and load much faster. Another perk to purchasing additional storage is it also uses less electrical power than a conventional hard drive. And with prices dropping annually, it is easy to get your money’s worth by determining the price per GB and also how much storage you require. Ideally, 128GB (and in some situations 64GB) is enough for the operating system, programs and some games. You shouldn’t store media (like music, videos or pictures) on a Solid State Drive because the fuller the SSD gets, the slower it will run. Other storage options are available for media storage, such as cloud storage.

A Toshiba Satellite P75-A7200 increased its WorldBench score from 279 to 435 (a higher number means a faster PC). A Maingear tower PC doubled its score from 162 to 325. ”

Dropbox announced a new initiative at their Open conference on Tuesday called Project Infinite. Project Infinite utilizes a new interface that allows users to see all of the files they have stored in the cloud within their machine’s file explorer. Users will not be required to keep local copies of each document, image, spreadsheet, or other data file, everything stored in Dropbox will be readily available regardless. Just like with any locally stored files, users will be able to move and manage their files in the cloud by moving them around inside the Mac OS X Finder or Windows File Explorer.
The current Dropbox format hasn’t changed much since its initial launch around 7 years ago. This new initiative is a big move for the company as well as the cloud reliant community. Project Infinite would build upon the original functionality of Dropbox and allow users to work with a greater volume of files, without the added hassle. As with anything else, a lot has been left unanswered when it comes to Project Infinite. Dropbox won’t say when it plans to incorporate the new version into the publicly available version of its desktop applications. In addition to the lack of a launch date, the company has not released which customers will be able to use Project Infinite once it does launch.
Dropbox has also released a new File Properties API that allows third party involvement. Users will now be able to apply custom metadata to files stored in Dropbox, enabling security applications such as data migration services and digital loss prevention services.
Dropbox has entertained the idea of paid cloud storage, trying to persuade businesses to choose Dropbox over other cloud storage options. Pushing hard for commercial adoption leaves the possibility that this new interface may be completely unavailable without subscription.
Guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

Skydrive is Microsoft’s cloud technology to make it easy for uses to accesses files anywhere, internet, pc, mac, or smartphone. It comes with 25gb of free online space. What’s neat about this its linked your Live Messenger account as well as your Mesh account that allows you to not only share files, but access any computer that associated with the account, you can browse to drives, shares files and you can also remote into the pc (RDP) and control the computer from where ever you have internet access. There is an app you you can install on your pc, mac or smartphone.

Symantec has recently release a backup exec appliance called the Symantec Backup Exec 3600 Appliance. Here are some specifications.
- It is an all-in-one solution pre-packaged with Backup Exec 2010
- Includes 5.5 TB of useable disk space.
- Unlimited software licensing to protect 5.5 TB of disk storage.
- You can protect an unlimited number of servers and applications both physical and virtual.
- Web based management console.
- It includes RAID 5 data drives, mirrored SSDs for the OS, redundant power supplies and battery backup on the RAID controller.
I have yet to first hand see this product in action but it does sound like a pretty neat little box. This appears to me to be a more enterprise level backup solution as the price tag MSRP is around $25,000 dollars, but it packs quite a punch for such a small device.
I tried to demo this but Symantec will not actually send you a demo product. I probably wouldn’t either for the cost of one of the devices.

A couple of components that are mostly overlooked by many users of Windows Live Essentials (Live Messenger) are the Mesh and Skydrive apps that come standard when when you install Windows Live Essentials: Other Programs. We all use the messenger component to chat with friends and co-workers, I’d like to discuss Mesh and the Skydrive.
Mesh allows you to sync all your documents, files, and photos across your different computers. Skydrive gives you 5gb of free online storage where you can access your files and make changes and have them sync’d across all your devices, including your smartphones and tablets.
All transfers are encrypted using the Transport Layer Security (TLS) or Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocols.
Mesh also allows you to connect to your home computer from your work computer. You simply have to setup the access points from your machines.
You can also sync program settings such as Internet Favorites, this allows all settings to be the same on all computers utilizing Mesh.
IBM’s Watson supercomputer may be best known for single-handedly beating “Jeopardy!” game show champs but IBM has taken it one step further which is proving to be a huge benefit for the healthcare community.
IBM has partnered with WellPoint which will assist in building applications that can be specialized for each doctor and organization. Imagine the applications of this for healthcare in every specialization — quite impressive!
It is now being leveraged to help doctors at Cedars-Sinai’s Cancer Clinic in Los Angeles stay up-to-date on medical breakthroughs and treatments.Watson helps doctors by providing many different cancer treatment options in a matter of seconds by pulling data from current clinical records and treatments, historical records, and past cancer cases.
If you are using Hyper-V virtual machine, with thin provisioned (or dynamic) virtual disks, you may find yourself needing to compact those virtual disk files (.VHD) to reclaim free space.
Typically you would compact a virtual hard disk in situations such as the following:
- After you install the guest operating system (which uses many temporary files)
- After you delete large amounts of data
- When you are preparing the virtual hard disk for archiving, for deployment to another computer or CD-ROM, or for distribution
To ensure that you get the smallest possible file size when you compact the virtual hard disk, you need to do some file system maintenance before you compact the disk. In the guest operating system of the virtual machine that is using the disk you want to compact, do the following:
- Remove any temporary folders or unwanted folders or files.
- Empty the Recycle Bin.
- Defragment the disk.
Note that when running a defrag, you will actually grow the .VHD file prior to compacting, so make sure the host server has enough free space to accommodate it.
Shut down the VM, then go to the settings and go to the disk settings and click edit. This will bring up the disk edit wizard and the keep the first selected option, Compact.
Depending on the size of the .VHD file, and the available “white space” within the file, compacting may take a significant amount of time. So be sure to plan your downtime accordingly.
You may receive the error message “The system failed to compact disk.vhd. Error Code: The requested operation could not be completed due to a file system limitation” when attempting to compact the .VHD file.
First, check to see that there are no VSS backups on the VHD by running a “vssadmin list shadows” command in an elevated command prompt.
Second, delete any VSS backups that are present by running “vssadmin delete shadows /all“. If this fails to delete the VSS backups, you may need to resort to the “DiskShadow” utility in WS2K8 and WS2K8R2. (There’s some more information on DiskShadow here (free registration required) and also here.)
