iOS 9 Lockscreen Bypass Allows Access to Contacts and Photos

An iPhone user recently discovered a trick that allows people to bypass the devices passcode and gain access to Contacts and Photos apps.  If you use an alphanumeric rather than a four-digit passcode, you probably have nothing to worry about.

The exploit itself has quite a few steps:lockscreen bypass

  1. You first enter the wrong PIN four times.
  2. On the fifth attempt you enter three numbers and bring Siri up by holding the home button.
  3. You ask for the time once Siri is up, click on the World Clock tab, and add a new clock.
  4. After entering a few letters, select them to share in a text message. You then have access to iOS’s Contacts app, which also grants access to photos.

Although it is a few steps to take, it can be done. However, even though you have access to contacts and photos, there’s not much else you can do as the phone is still technically locked.

If this is a concern, you can weaken this exploit by disabling Siri on your lock screen.

iOS9 Skyrockets Cellular Usage. Wi-fi Assist Feature May Be Responsible

ios9Noticing a significant increase in data usage since installing iOS9? Wi-fi assist may be the cause.  The feature switches your iPhone to cellular usage when it detects you’re in a spot where wi-fi coverage is lacking. For those with unlimited data this wouldn’t be an issue; however, for those who are under a metered data plan this could result with an alarming bill next month.  With this setting you could potentially be consuming your data allowance even when you’re just at home or in the office.

It’s a useful feature, but may not be appropriate for all circumstances. The default for this feature is on, but you can switch it off under Settings>Cellular and scroll down to the bottom.  Also, you can check out your data usage by using the Reset Statistics feature found below the Wi-Fi- Assist if you want to keep a watchful eye.

Apple Removes Infected Malware from App Store

appsApple continues to preserve its reputation of preventing malicious intrusions from iPhones and iPads. However, there was a substantial outbreak of malware in the App Store, and Apple is persistent in its efforts to clean up the attacks. Reports have shown that 344 infected apps were removed from the store.  The said apps were carrying Xcode Ghost, a compromised copy of Apple’s Xcode that was injected prior to sending apps to the App Store, some of which were highly popular apps with iOS users. WeChat, China’s largest messaging app, was among those that had been hit.

Up until now, it is believed that only five infected apps reached the App Store. Thankfully, no real damage has been detected thus far. However, despite the fact that this intrusion didn’t have devastating effects, it does illustrate that the iOS public is not completely invulnerable to malware.

New Apple TV Updates: Control Your Apple TV With Siri | BVA IT Consulting Blog

apple_tv_2015_roundupVoice controlled television is now available with the emergence of Siri-enhanced Apple TV. With the touch of the Siri button on the new remote, you will be able to voice command your virtual assistant to pull up your favorite shows, music, movies, and apps.  With the new Apple TV you will also be able to conveniently execute a universal search across all the available apps rather than searching through one app at a time. At the time being, Apple TV will initially work with the apps iTunes, Netflix, Hulu, HBO, and Showtime; however, Apple has affirmed that there are more to come.

As demonstrated in a demo, Siri seems to be capable of a lot more than just searching for a name of a show or movie. The iOS-based operating system, tvOS, is what Apple TV will run; therefore, iOS games will be available for play on Apple TV. You will be able to sync Apple TV with other Apple devices, so games on your iPhone can be pulled up on your TV.

Hardware wise, Apple TV uses a 64-bit A8 chip and has HDMI and Ethernet ports. Pointing the remote to the television is now a thing of the past as the remote uses Bluetooth.

The Apple TV arrives to 80 Countries in October. The cost will be $149 for the 32GB and $199 for the 64GB.

New 3D Touch iPhone Feature – iPhone 6s and 6s Plus 3D Touch Feature Review | BVA IT Consulting Blog

3dtouchiphone_3434939k

On the surface, the new iPhone 6s and 6s Plus appearance is very similar to its former predecessor with the exception of the addition of a new ‘rose gold’ color. However, there are a few different and notable internal enhances that are worth taking in to consideration when deciding whether or not to obtain the new upgraded iPhone, one of which is the 3D touch. Those of you that have a Macbook Pro or Apple Watch will be familiar with the Force Touch feature, which is comparable to the new 3D Touch for iPhone 6s and 6s Plus. 3D touch is essentially the Force Touch, but for the iPhone. It not only recognizes the touch of your fingers but also senses the force and pressure you apply, adding a new element of control you have over the content you seek to view. Simply add a slight pressure to open a sub menu of options/take a glimpse of something such as a picture or firmly press down to open its content in a full screen.
