Wireless Networks Not Available After Windows 8.1 Upgrade to Windows 10

Once you upgrade from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10, there are no listed wireless networks available even if your wireless network adapter is functioning correctly. Restarting the computer or trying to reinstall the wireless network adapter does not address the problem. This issue can also prevent your wired Ethernet from functioning correctly as well, whether the connections are made through a built-in Ethernet adapter or a USB Ethernet adapter.

One known issue is the unsupported VPN software from Windows 8.1 that is not upgraded correctly to Windows 10. It occurs if older VPN software is installed on Windows 8.1 and is present when the older software version contains a filter driver (the Deterministic Network Enhancer).

It is crucial to follow these steps carefully to resolve the problem. Failing to do so can consequentially lead to serious problems if you modify the registry incorrectly.  Back up the registry for restoration before you modify in case you run into problems.

This issue is set to occur when older versions of the Cisco VPN client and SonicWall Global VPN client are utilized. You can contact your VPN vendor to attain supported software for Windows 10.

Small Business Web Hosts for 2015

web hostsWe all live in a very connected world. If you do not already have a website for your business, take the chance to consider the advantages of the internet and the possibilities it provides for marketing yourself. Don’t miss out on the potentially lucrative opportunities that may present itself because your name is discoverable on the internet. Although creating a website can take months, a Web hosting service is your most valuable tool in getting started with your website.

Web hosts can get increasingly expensive, but depending on the features needed for your website, you can always compare and contrast the different options you have available to you. For small business owners, you will want a dedicated server or VPS hosting. A dedicated server will be more than $100 per month. It’s costly, but the advantage is having your website living in a server by itself. You would need to handle the firewalls and maintenance yourself, unless you get a managed server, which of course costs more. However, if you want to save some money, VPS hosting is another option, and you can get one for about $20 to $30 a month. If you build your website in a VPS environment, you do not share resources with other sites that are on the same server the way you would with shared hosting. Your site actually lives in a server area that has its own storage, RAM, monthly data transfers, and operating system.

When considering the costs of a web host, it is a better idea to wait until you know what features you need before committing to an annual plan. You may want to shop for a web host that has unlimited monthly data transfer and email, the choice between solid state or traditional hard drive storage, and customer support 24/7. If you are selling a product, get a web host that offers a Secure Sockets Layer certificate, which encrypts the data between the customer’s browser and web host to protect purchasing information. Depending on the company you go with, it could be free of charge or up to $100.

Don’t forget the importance of site uptime. Once your site is down, your clients and customers will have difficulty reaching you or accessing your products and services.  Although all sites can potentially suffer from ups and downs, it’s essential to choose a web host that does an excellent job at keeping sites up and running.

Take a look at these featured Web hosts and decide which is best for you.

iOS 9 Lockscreen Bypass Allows Access to Contacts and Photos

An iPhone user recently discovered a trick that allows people to bypass the devices passcode and gain access to Contacts and Photos apps.  If you use an alphanumeric rather than a four-digit passcode, you probably have nothing to worry about.

The exploit itself has quite a few steps:lockscreen bypass

  1. You first enter the wrong PIN four times.
  2. On the fifth attempt you enter three numbers and bring Siri up by holding the home button.
  3. You ask for the time once Siri is up, click on the World Clock tab, and add a new clock.
  4. After entering a few letters, select them to share in a text message. You then have access to iOS’s Contacts app, which also grants access to photos.

Although it is a few steps to take, it can be done. However, even though you have access to contacts and photos, there’s not much else you can do as the phone is still technically locked.

If this is a concern, you can weaken this exploit by disabling Siri on your lock screen.

Microsoft Releases its Own Hybrid Laptop, the Surface Book

microsoft-surface-bookMicrosoft has unveiled the first laptop it has ever released on its own, the Surface Book. Described by Microsoft’s Panos Panay as the “Ultimate laptop,” the Surface Book specs seem to live up to his words. The Surfaces Book is a 13.5-inch, magnesium alloy laptop with high powered internals that also has the ability to detach from its keyboard to become a surface tablet. The laptop is just .51-.90 inches thin and weighs 1.6 lbs.

The laptop’s unique ability to become a tablet is possible because the battery and the Intel Core processor are built into the screen half of the laptop, while the GPU is in the keyboard base.  The concept is to use the device in laptop mode for heavier tasks such as typing, playing games, or editing vSurface-Book-image-1-e1444134958401ideos and detaching from the powerful GPU base for lighter tasks.

In laptop mode, the Surface Book’s keyboard has a back-lit chiclet-style keyboard and a multi-touch glass track pad. Microsoft says that the battery life will last up to 12 hours in laptop mode and 3 hours in tablet mode; however, it all depends on your usage.

Microsoft’s Pinay boasts that it is the “thinnest and most powerful PC ever created.” Topping out at 1TB storage and 16GB of RAM, the Surface Book will cost you.  128GB of storage and 8GB of RAM starts at $1,500, while the fully loaded laptop will costs over $3,000.

Samsung’s First Mainstream SSD is the Fastest Yet

The 950 pro hasamsung-ssd-950-pro-m2-x4-2015-09-22-01s been recently launched by Samsung. The gum stick-sized M.2 PCI Express device is Samsung’s first consumer SSD that uses vertical NAND (V-NAND) technology to deliver speed. The 512GB can read at 2.5GB/s and write at 1.5GB/s, surpassing its predecessor, the SM951 SSD. This is Samsung’s first mainstream device to use Non-Volatile Memory Express, designed precisely for SSDs to absorb less power and last longer.  The SSD uses Samsung’s 2nd generation 32 layer V-NAND, rather than the 480-layer chips that was previously announced.

The 950 Pro outshines the SATA-interface 850 Pro, exceeding it with four times the read speed and triple the write speeds.  The new SSD can withstand 20G vibrations and 1500G of physical shock, which is befitting for rugged devices. With higher bandwidth and lower latency for high-end PC and laptops, the 950 Pro is ideal for professionals seeking advanced performance.

You will be able to easily buy one next month for $200 (256GB) and $350 (512GB).

Malware Affects Thousands of WordPress Sites

wordpress-malware-200x200According to security firm Sucuri, a significant number of Wordpress sites have been hit by Malware. Thousands of corporate and personal websites have been compromised by a new “visitorTracker_isMob” malware over the last few weeks. Evidently, visitors who attempt to visit the affected sites are redirected to a Nuclear Exploit Kit landing page, which probes their system for vulnerabilities and delivers ransomware threats. Around 95 percent of the compromised websites Sucuri has detected are running Wordpress, 17 percent of which have been put on Google’s blacklists.

The best thing you can do to protect yourself from such attacks is to update your system as much as possible, including installation of the most recent operating system updates that Microsoft or Apple offers.  Also, make sure you run antivirus and anti-malware apps routinely as well.

If you’re a Wordpress user, keep your plugins updated, including premium ones. It is also recommended to check if your website is currently being affected through WordPress’s Free Security/Malware Scanner.
